A new awakening

It's been almost two years since an update, and for that we do apologise. We have been working very hard to ensure the system is running efficiently whilst also increasing security.

And as a result of the ever present support of members and staff, we have a new announcement to make. Bur.st has once again opened its doors to new membership!.

Here is a summary of the services provided for all non-donating members:

  • A shell account
  • Mail hosting
  • DNS hosting
  • 10 MB of storage

And for all donating members (a big THANKYOU):

  • 1 gigabyte of disk storage
  • Web hosting
  • Mysql and PHP
  • Multiple mailboxes
  • Full access to all programs
  • ... and many more

To all new members, welcome, and enjoy your stay at Bur.st.

Bur.st problems / downtime (February 2009)

Hi all - we experienced the failure of 2 out of 4 of our RAID10 disks on Sunday. As a result we had no disk redundancy.

We have performed work to fully backup, replace all hard drives and re-install a newer operating system. This work was performed from Sunday through Monday night. We are working as of Tuesday morning (February 16) to finish restoring services.

No data was lost, and mail should have been spooled - but it will take some time (1-2 days) for all the mail to flush through.

Please contact support@bur.st with any problems. We are still working on MySQL.

Bur.st in 2008

In recent news:

  • Admins have resolved a major mail server problem
  • We have some plans to fix the support queue. Until then please try to keep requests down to a minimum
  • Mail seconding services are being discontinued and will be phased out over the comming months
  • There will be some downtime soon for a RAM upgrade and hdd repair
  • Donations have dried up and we are bleeding money now, with new signups having been closed for a long time due to the lack of support staff

Bur.st Annual General Meeting 2007

The minutes of Bur.st's 2007 Annual General Meeting are now available online.

Bur.st Powers On Into 2007!

As you can see we have a new website design, thanks to Brent. We hope you like it, but if not there is a thread on the forums about it where you can give your opinion.

We have been working to clean up the spam on the forums and a new forum patch and security features will hopefully keep the spammers out of there. The forum is a good place to go for common problems and questions about using bur.st for various things (such as web development). Remember that the Bur.st support team cannot help you with setting up your website or coding PHP, but you can usually find a forum post for common problems.

Support queues are very busy lately as we have many new users and our support team is coping as best they can.

Thankyou to all our users who continue to support us with donations! They help to keep our servers running 24/7 and we simply wouldnt be here if it wasnt for the generosity of these users.

Bur.st Annual General Meeting 2006

The AGM was held tonight (17th October 2006) on irc.bur.st #AGM and everything went well. Minutes of the meeting will be made available soon(ish).

Please welcome Rob Morgan (of Waix Resources) and Simon Chalmers (our fearless Technical Manager) onto the board. Also welcome back Andrew Francis returning to the board for another term. You just cant keep this man away!

Thanks to all the members who showed up for the event. The IRC format was ideal, as it allowed members from across Australia to attend. The lack of refreshments at this AGM was cause for minor concern.

New Server has Arrived

After much work and time our new server is now fully live and functional. The server went live on the 1st April 2006. As this is a new server there are bound to be a few hiccups so please email with any issues.

Bur.st Donating Members - Thank you for your continued support!

Bur.st relies on user donations to pay the bills, keep critical systems up-to-date and expand for the future. Dear Bur.st Users,

Important announcement: Bur.st to close in March 2012

We won't beat around the bush - we are close to shutting down due to lack of funds and big changes in the market around the types of services that Bur.st has offered for the past 13 years. Over the years we have provided a variety of services to the wider Australian online population. In recent years due to time constraints on our executive committee and support team, we have found it difficult to keep up with the work that Bur.st requires, and the gap between donation levels and our costs has grown.

We expect Bur.st will stop providing services to the public on 27 March 2012. We are sending this email now because we want to give you as much notice as possible.

In January we will be sending you information about alternatives to Bur.st's most popular services, including email and web hosting. We are also investigating ways that others may continue to provide services to Bur.st users. If you are a person, organisation or company who may be able to provide continuity of service to Bur.st's users - we want to hear from you! Our priorities are keeping the promises we've made to users regarding privacy and security, and providing a smooth migration.

We thank you for your understanding and your support over the years.

Regards,

Bur.st Support
